Effect of Strain Measurement Layout on Damage Detection and Localization in a Free Falling Compliant Cylinder Impacting a Water Surface

The need for effective and reliable damage detection localization systems is growing in several engineering fields, particular water impact problems characterized by impulsive loading conditions, high amplitude vibrations large local deformations. In this paper, we further develop the approach presented previous works to detect of water-impacting structures. Specifically, provide a set experimental tests on flexible plastic cylinder impacting after 50 cm free fall. cylindrical specimen artificially damaged known position. Strain measurements are performed through nine fiber Bragg gratings distributed along circumference section. We show that strain sensors can be used as reference sensors, structure displacements reconstruction, control purposes, computation difference between measured expected deformation may allow detection. Moreover, investigate how exchanging same sensor arrangement affect localization.
